How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My 8-year-old Havanese (aka "circus dog" – always jumping) lived life on easy mode… until last year. First, he got Lyme disease, then a mystery limp. Vet ran all the tests, found nothing, but the bills sure found me. Healthy Paws covered its share in a few weeks - which is reasonable given that this was his first insurance claim. Then, plot twist: orthopedist discovered that he had an ACL tear. Surgery needed ASAP. The bill? Yikes. Healthy Paws? BOOM – claim paid in 3 days! Faster than my dog can steal a treat. Pawsome service! Keep up the great work, Healthy Paws! 3 slobbery kisses from my pup! 🐶

We can't thank HealthyPaws enough for being there when our family most needed them. We have been HealthyPaws customers since Biscuit was 4 months old and have never been disappointed, and in all seriousness we can say you are our favorite business relationship, one of the few that does more than promised and delivers exactly what you say you will with care, empathy, professionalism and speed. Biscuit like any dog has had his exciting moments, he got a bite that got infected, he broke a paw and has had various other predictable canine troubles, and every time we needed Healthypaws to step up they have been there. Frankly human health insurance, car insurance and life insurance should be run... Read More

Healthy Paws has been my go to Pet insurance for around 12 years. They have been absolutely professional and always put my dogs health first The moment I get a puppy I sign that puppy up right away with Healthy Paws. And they have given my dogs the best end-of-life care possible. Thank you Healthy Paws!

My beautiful baby, Moneypenny (10) had just visited my vet for a possible neck injury. She was sent home with A LOT of medication. She had a reaction and started vomiting and pooping blood! I took her to the emergency vet and she went to ICU for a few days then discharged. But, immediately it started happening again! Two more days ICU. Nearly $3k total in vet bills. Healthy Paws covered all the agreed procedures and medication. This is her fourth time with a $1000+ vet bill and they have come through with reimbursement within 72 hours of claim submission every time! They even emailed to ask how she’s doing. I’ll gladly keep paying!

I encourage anyone who has a pet to get health insurance for them. Having Healthy Paws for both of my furbabies, past and present, has been tremendously helpful in critical times. Just with any insurance, you never want to have to use it but when the time comes and it’s needed you will thank yourself for being able to take the best possible care of your pet as possible. The customer service is amazing and being reimbursed is hassle free and quick. There is no other pet insurance I would trust more. I’ve been with Healthy Paws for the past 15 years with no regrets. Also, I love how they check in on your furbabies to see how their progress is when they have been seeing the vet repeatedly.... Read More

Healthy Paws had ALWAYS been there for me and my dog Ari! My dogs are my kids…one of my pups, Ari has idiopathic cluster seizures disorder…which is particularly dangerous because if not treated in time can lead to a painful death. I am lucky enough to be near Tufts University veterinary hospital with some of the best neurologists in the world! And through the past 5 years of treatment, appointments, medications, er visits Healthy Paws has been there for me! Living up to their promises, no questions asked, no red tape, just paid claims in a timely manner! Without Healthy Paws, I would have had to take out a second mortgage, but with their help me and Ari are living our best... Read More

We have a yellow lab (Simon) and have a pet insurance policy with Healthy Paws. Simon tore his ACL and had to have surgery. Healthy Paws paid the invoice in only two days with no questions asked other than to kindly following up a couple days later inquiring how Simon was recovering. It made a stressful experience easier for us. If you are in the market for pet insurance, I would highly recommend Healthy Paws!

Healthy Paws is hands down the best pet insurance company out there. Their claims are seamless, quick, and easy. Their customer service is second to none. I was skeptical after dealing with another company that was dishonest years ago with another cat but after she passed, I swore I would never have to choose whether to treat or euthanize due to cost again and I decided to look into pet insurance again. Healthy Paws had one of the best reputations and was very reasonable compared to other reputable companies. My mother also had Healthy Paws and only had good experiences with them so I felt confident choosing them. I’ve been with them for about 1.5 years before I needed to use my... Read More
