Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

What can I say? Only good things! My little doggie is pretty young (around 8 years old) and has been sick with a chronic illness for about 18 months now, which requires lots of ultrasounds and visits to the doctor, not to mention expensive prescription medications. The stress and financial burden are very great, and I honestly don't know what I would do without Healthy Paws and their financial help. Their website is easy to navigate, their claims submission is straightforward, their customer service is always wonderful, and they have always paid the claims laid out in the policy. I wish I could express better in words how awesome they are and how thankful we are. I'll forever be... Read More

We are so grateful for more than 8 years of support and compassion from Healthy Paws. They could teach human health insurance companies a thing or two about processing claims quickly, not questioning required medical care, and simply checking in on customers to see how they're doing. We love Healthy Paws!

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. I switched to them when my pup was 3 from another insurance that was outrageously expensive. Until last summer, I never needed insurance but then my pup got very ill with Cancer and needed surgeries and treatments. I would have not have been able to afford all of it without Healthy Paws. They covered so much and literally saved my pups life. I can't believe how easy it is to submit an invoice on their app and how quick the turn around time is. I have never had to wait more than a few days and sometimes i have had the reimbursement in my account next day! Thank you Healthy Paws for saving my pup and giving me more years with her.

We've had Healthy Paws pet insurance since our goldendoodle was two and through a broken leg, a lipoma that needed removing, and surgery for cancer, we've never had any issues with payment on a claim. Having reliable pet insurance has made it possible to give our dog the care we want to give him. Very very grateful.

Healthy Paws was recommended to me back before I got my German Shepherd and wow I am so glad I took that advise. My guy has been through a lot and they have payed for majority of his most expensive surgeries (mostly dental) and even some stuff with regular vet check-ups which isn't typically covered with a lot of insurance companies. I would highly recommend them to any pet owner!

We’ve been fortunate to have Healthy Paws as partners in our dog Ripley’s life since he was a puppy—over 12 years now—and we truly can’t say enough good things about them. From the small bumps and scrapes along the way to the big, scary stuff—like Ripley’s recent emergency surgery—they’ve been there every step. Ripley became very sick and needed a 7-day ICU stay along with the removal of his gallbladder and spleen. We knew it would be a costly procedure, but because we had Healthy Paws, we were able to focus on what really mattered: making the best decision for Ripley's health without the added stress of wondering how we’d pay for it. Not only was the claims process incredibly fast... Read More

Healthy Paws makes filing claims easy and reimbursement is issued very quickly. Their app also allows you to see what the status of your claim is, and the explanation of benefits on your claim. The customer service is quick to respond to emails and you can speak to a real person on the phone! I am very happy with the service we have received for 10 1/2 years.

The claims process is so easy and takes the worry about how to pay for your pet’s emergency care away, when all you should be worrying about is getting your pet better! I wish human claims paid out that fast!

They reimburse us promptly and take a lot of the stress out of the visit to the vet. Its nice to make decisions based on what's best for the cat and not finances.

Sharing this year's premium increase on every post or article re: Healthy Paws. As a loyal customer since 2011, who has been dealing with the already massive price increases every year since 2020/21 but forced to deal with it, I can't anymore and am being forced to cancel. Sharing this for the greater good, and won't even share further details in hope the numbers you see below speaks for itself. Started around $34 in 2011. These numbers are for 2 small dogs, with the majority of the increase related to the old one). Policy Information • Protected Since: 06/08/2011 • Current Monthly Premium: $431.58 • New Monthly Premium Starting in 63 Days: $1,207.12

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
DA - We realize no one likes any form of premium increase. In accordance with the terms of the Policy and the associated rating rules, monthly premiums may change for all policyholders. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed with and approved by (where required) each states insurance regulator. Premiums reflect the cost of treatment advances in veterinary medicine, characteristics of the individual pet, and other factors, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region where the pet resides. Please note that premiums are not based on a given pets individual claim history; rather, premiums are based on the collective experience of all pets insured. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. The Healthy Paws Team
