How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws pet insurance has been top notch. My dog has always been healthy up until recently. It's been one thing after another with numerous, costly different vet visits including specialists. He's had X-Rays and blood work multiple times, an ultrasound, and eye surgery. It's very stressful to go through this with my beloved animal but Healthy Paws took that financial worry away. It is extremely easy to submit a claim on the app. You simply take a picture. Your reimbursement can be set up to get directly deposited into your bank account. It takes hardly any time at all. They update you throughout the process and the best part is that the money has always been in my account by... Read More

Myrna - We'd like to welcome you to the Healthy Paws family. Since we are a "paper light" company, we sent you a welcome email the day of your enrollment using the email address you provided when setting up your account. It contains information on your policy and access to your new Online Healthy Paws account. In that account you'll be able to access all of your policy documents and make changes to your policy if needed. Give your baby a big hug for us!

We are the proud parents of a beautiful pug named Rosie, who is just 3years old. Being parents of previous pugs we understand the health issues that could plaque this little guys. Over the years we had various insurance companies that promise you the world, but when it comes to deliver, they fall short. When I found Healthy Paws I questioned their policies. I couldn't believe there was a $100.00 deductible available along with the 90% payment of the bill, excluding doctors fees. I asked if this was 90% of MY BILL or the national average. MY BILL was the answer. These last 3 months have been upsetting as our pug had issues with her bladder . We started with medicine, then went... Read More

Sheila - We're sorry Rosie was having such serious bladder issues and glad she is finally back to her happy self! Thanks for taking the time to speak about our annual deductible and reimbursements based upon your actual invoice - not on a fee schedule or "usual and customary charges". So happy we could relieve some of the financial stress and let you focus on Rosie. Give her a big hug from us!

I have been with Healthy Paws for the past 3 years and recently had to contact them for expenses related to my dog’s surgery. The customer service and support was outstanding - very professional and thoroughly explained the claim process. I submitted my claims via the iPhone app, which was extremely easy to use. I received immediate feedback indicating receipt of the claim and then another email detailing specific coverage. I received my claim reimbursement check within a week of initial submission. Likewise, I received an email from Healthy Paws after my dog’s medical procedure inquiring as to how she did with her surgery. I am grateful I have Healthy Paws insurance and most... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for my dog for almost five years, and it was one of the best decisions I made. In the past 14 months, my dog has had TPLO surgery on both knees. One knee went perfectly, the other knee had every rare post-op complication known to dogkind, which resulted in two more surgeries, plus physical therapy and many, many x-rays and tests. Healthy Paws has covered everything--even the physical therapy! It's super easy to submit a claim, and I get a reimbursement check in the mail within a week. They have never questioned or denied a claim, and everyone I've talked with or emailed with there has been incredibly friendly and helpful. I can't recommend them enough--I... Read More

My 7 month old Goldendoodle, Quincee, wouldn't eat breakfast one morning, only grass, and I knew something was wrong. My regular vet had no openings so I took her to the emergency vet. X-rays showed what appeared to be rocks in her intestine, which she passed, but an ultrasound the following day revealed an obstruction she could not pass. Emergency surgery was performed and a piece of rubber toy she had dug up in the yard along with all that grass she ate to try and throw up were removed. Through this 4 day or so process I only worried about Quincee and not how much it was costing. As soon as I could I had insured her with Healthy Paws and I am so thankful I did. After my $250 annual... Read More

Healthy Paws has been terrific while Akira, our Shiba, was having a lot of respiratory problems. They turned all our claims around quickly, and were super nice to deal with. I was a little nervous when the claim levels started to rise, but they are rock solid. Highly recommended.

My dog Murphy is insured with Healthy Paws and everytime I have had to use them it has been a 5 star experience. Murphy had to have an emergency surgery and when I told Healthy Paws about it I had a check within days to pay for the surgery. I also had phone calls from a few people after it was done asking how murphy was doing. I am not a technical person at all and using the computer is not something I spend a lot of time on. Using their app on my phone I have found to be so simple and fast. When I have had a question and have called their customer service is unmatched. I believe I found the best pet insurance around with Healthy Paws!!!!!!!
