How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Have had no issues with them paying claims. And the premiums are reasonable. Kobe recently fractured a tooth & needed to have surgery to extract the tooth . When doing the pre- surgical bloodwork the vet was concerned cause one of his liver enzymes was elevated so he ordered an ultrasound. He was diagnosed with gallbladder cholestasis ( slow moving bile) & needed to be put on 2 meds - one for the gallbladder & another for liver support . Both are very expensive & healthy paws has cone through and paid all claims. So happy my neighbor recommended them. I recommend healthy paws to all who ask me for recommendations

I can’t say enough about how wonderful Healthypaws is. Unfortunately, I have a very sick little dog who needs loads of medical care and medication. There are never any issues about paying her claims, I send the bills via their website, within a day I get a confirmation of receipt, I’m updated when claim is processed and within 2 weeks I receive a check, it’s that simple. I don’t know where my little Buttons would be without them.

We had a German Shepherd that past at the age of 16. Towards the end of her life she had some hip concerns but overall she was healthy and major issues free. She past in 2012. After much consideration it felt right when I was introduced by a co worker to this wonderful litter of puppies. We never had pet insurance in the past but with todays costs I researched pet insurance and I am so happy to have selected Healthy Paws. If not for Healthy Paws we would be in a terrible predicament. Our 10 month old German Shepherd torn her left ACL, could barely walk , after sedated x-rays and medication she could manage bathroom walks but needed surgery at the cost of... Read More

We got a puppy from a reputable breeder 2 years ago, who has subsequently had 2 bowl obstructions and a broken leg, in addition to a recently diagnosed liver condition (all that in 2 years). I have been SOOO thankful for the Healthypaws pet insurance that we purchased when we first got her. Without it, we definitely would have needed to put her down. The surgeries have totaled about $16,000 in 2 years, and Healthypaws has never balked or let me down. With all of the care that our dog has received this year, I was nervous that they would hike my monthly rate up , but it only increased by $4.00 a month. Amazing! The plan is easy to work with (I put the bills on my credit card, and... Read More

I have been a Healthy Paws customer for about 5 years now and have 2 policies, one for each of my dogs. When I purchased these policies I expected filing claims to be tedious, to be denied constantly, and to want to cancel. Let me tell you how I couldn't have been more wrong. This company is hands down amazing. Filing a claim takes me seconds online, the customer service is ABOVE top notch, they actually care, (Mary in customer care provided me with the best experience I have ever had when dealing with a company.), and my claim has never been denied. They cover what they say they will. If you do your research and read your policy, they break it down exactly how it is. No surprises. I will... Read More

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. We first signed up for it through an offer at the college where I work, and when I told people we had done so, I got a lot of comments about how we should just open a little savings account and put the amount we'd put toward the premium in there instead, leaving us with cash if Renard never needed it. Well, we don't have human kids; Renard is our baby and treated as such - and guess what? About four years after we rescued him, he developed very serious heart disease, and his twice-yearly cardiologist visits ALONE cost more than we put into the purchase of his policy... and that doesn't even begin to include the cost of a recent stay at... Thank you for writing me to check on her. As you know, our 16mo Frenchie puppy, Delilah Jane, suffered a blunt force trauma injury from being hit by a car. This caused her abdomen to rip away from the tendon that runs down her belly, creating a large hernia in the muscle. As a result, her liver was pushed up against her lungs and one of her right lung lobes collapsed. I don’t remember crying so much in my life. Well, I want to let you know that she had her stitches removed last Monday and she is doing very well. She’s gained a pound and a half since her surgery, and is back to playing with her best friend Freckles, a rat terrier we adopted after his owner died. Because of her... Read More

Very very good insurance. Very very well run company with some wonderful staff! Our 29 claims were all honored to my satisfaction on the first round for about $4,300 in reimbursement checks over 2 1/2 years. Extremely easy to file claims with app or online. Good rates - nice balance of lower rates traded for a few less things covered (explanation below). Very helpful, friendly, and caring customer service. Modest annual increases (about 7%). They even allowed me to back-file 2 1/2 years of claims!!! Wow! They basically covered 90% of all diagnostic testing, medicine, and treatment for all the sicknesses & injuries beyond the $500/yr deductible, all rapidly without dispute.... Read More
