Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance became truly our partner in caring for our two dogs. The staff is caring, responsive, accurate, and authentic (you could feel they actually care). They processed the insurance quickly and kept us informed during the process. We paid the bill and were reimbursed promptly. All the promises were kept and more -- they reached out to see how our doggy was doing. We did a lot of research before choosing this company. Healthy paws was extremely helpful and efficient in resolving my puppy’s insurance claims. The turn-around time from my initial filing of a claim to receiving my checks - was AMAZINGLY QUICK! Awesome. The customer service was also outstanding. Very pleasant to talk with and informative. Only thing that can be approved on is the pickup calls time when you call in - the hold time was a bit long each time I called in, but once answered the insurance agents are wonderful to talk with, polite and helpful. I give them a thumbs up 👍🏻😀 and the company itself a 👍🏻😀. Very glad I chose healthy paws as my insurance carrier for my puppy

My 2 year old Sheepadoodle was recently diagnosed with Addison's disease and healthy paws has been amazing. They not only covered all of his visits, treatments and medications but they also checked in to see how he is doing!

Our yellow lab, Sully, recently had expensive tests to determine that he has a heart murmur and Dilated Cardiomyopathy. This may be an ongoing issue that we'll have to follow up on and test on a regular basis. We're so glad we have Healthy Paws by our side, as they covered every dollar that they agreed on when we signed up for coverage, and we received our reimbursement in an extremely timely manner. They then followed up by email to check on how Sully is feeling. We HIGHLY recommend Healthy Paws! :)

Healthy Paws is an integral part of my dog's life. It is an amazing organization that truly cares about pets and their pet parents. As my dog gets older, it is reassuring to know that Healthy Paws will be with us every step of the way. Bought healthy paws insurance when my dog was about 6 years old and healthy. Fast forward 2 years, she has a torn ligament in her leg and requires shockwave therapy, a brace, laser therapy, etc... a total "package" of $2500. this was my first claim with healthy paws and I was a bit nervous about them finding some loophole. Next thing I know, I get a variety of checks (and still coming in!) totaling 80% of the total out of pocket costs of her treatments. Could not be happier!

We have used Healthy Paws pet insurance since 2013 and they have always been amazing. When our sweet Peaches had to have TPLO surgery they covered the 90% quickly. And then, unbelievably, she was diagnosed with Lymphoma! Because we had Healthy Paws we did not hesitate to have her treated. Total price tag was $25,000 and they covered the 90%. The app is very easy to use and they never declined any claims! Just last month our sweet Penny had to have TPLO surgery and they promptly paid 90% of the $3500 claim. They even reached out to check on how she was doing! Currently we have 5 pets insured with Healthy Paws and would certainly recommend them!

I got my dog this insurance for my dog after seeing good recommendations. Most notably from an Instagram dog profile I follow. Decided it’s probably a good idea just in case. I went for the highest tier to get the best coverage. I do have a large breed dog that are susceptible to injury. Long story short my dog tore his ACL. Jump forward for a second he eventually tore the other one a few months after recovering from his first ACL rupture. There is no way I could have afforded both surgeries so close together or do physical therapy to get him better. I was able to thanks to healthy paws. I am so grateful to Healthy Paws, and so happy that I selected them for my dogs' insurance. My beloved mastiff was hospitalized, critically ill in ICU for a week, with aspiration pneumonia and post emergency surgery for a GI perforation. He had suffered a similar condition in the past, and I was concerned that this would be considered a pre existing condition, and thus not covered. I was not ready to lose him, but was terrified about the cost of this hospitalization. Not only did Healthy Paws cover the $30,000 hospitalization and follow up care, but they are actually able and willing to tell me two days in that it would be covered so that I did not have to worry.
