Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have been a Healthy Paws customer since 2013 but only recently had to use their service for the surgically removal of 3 large cyst on my small dog. I found their customer service to be simply outstanding. They made the submission of my claim very easy and they completed my claim in under 2 weeks for which they covered 90% of my dog’s surgery including all related cost, medicine, and even taxes. I highly recommend them and appreciate all their help as it allowed me to focus on my dog’s recovery without stressing over the cost of the surgery.

We are so thankful for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!! We certainly had hopes of never having to use it unfortunately our fur son had a complete CCL tear. But so grateful we chose Healthy Paws! One of the reasons we love Healthy Paws is we were able to choose the best surgeon in our area so he would have the best opportunity for a complete recovery!! Also extremely grateful for how quickly they processed his claim! Their customer service is outstanding!! They even checked in on him after his surgery to see how he was doing! Really highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!!

We have thankfully had Healthy Paws Pet insurance for our Mastiff since we brought him home at about 8 weeks old. In the past 4 years, Kingston has had 3 very expensive major knee surgeries....he had his first TPLO on his left knee @ 2 years old, and then @ 4 years old he had to have the right knee TPLO, and meniscus repair and then the left knee TPLO done all over again. These knee surgeries were an absolute necessity on a 260 pound dog. he has to be able to walk on his own. The best! Absolutely the most sincere, genuine, authentic group of humans helping me pay to keep my dog healthy. My frenchie has had a myriad of issues (poor angel) and HealthyPaws has not only helped me pay for, they've PERSONALLY checked up on her after big procedures, called me with follow up, and NEVER EVER given me grief about paying her bills. In September of 2015 I gave myself a birthday present of health insurance for my dogs. I researched companies and read reviews and Healthy Paws came out on top. I have not been disappointed. I have had several claims since signing up, some minor and others major and HP has been quick and efficient to get the claims paid. The peace of mind this gives me is indescribable. Recently my dog Rosie had an oral tumor and as I was standing in the specialists' office reviewing the estimate of charges, I wasn't sick to my stomach worrying about the cost, instead we could concentrate on determining the best plan for her surgery and recovery. Getting insurance was the best decision I've ever made.

I've been really happy with Healthy Paws' coverage for our lab-pit mix. Last December, he tore his right cranial cruciate ligament (like a human's ACL) and tore the meniscus, so he needed surgery costing more than $3,300. After I submitted the claim, Healthy Paws asked for the medical records from our primary care vet and the surgeon, and within a couple weeks they completed the claim processing, and paid 90 percent after payment of our deductible. I have been very please with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. I have a 14 month old Goldendoodle who likes to eat socks, toys, etc. and has had to have surgery twice because of this habit. The turn around on payment is fast and they always contact me to see how my pup is doing. I highly recommend this insurance. Insure them as soon as you get them!

Really easy working with them. I have a large mixed breed dog who's had a series of injuries with complications - very expensive vet bills. Healthy Paws has been awesome and always paid the share they promised they would, no challenges. It made making the hard vet decisions a lot less stressful when we don't have money issues hanging over our heads. Insurance is there for the "what if." We all hope we won't encounter health and injury problems, but it happens. That's why insurance exists and we pay the monthly premium.
