Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Not only does Healthy Paws process my claims quickly; after one of my "kid's" recent surgery, they also followed up to see how he was doing; that's going the extra mile! Every member of Healthy Paws that I contact is very courteous and knowledgeable. Having Healthy Paws for both my "kids" gives us great peace of mind that we can provide any necessary care they may need. I love the Healthy Paws website, too! I can check on the status of my claims and even make changes to my coverage, and more. Also, I just set up direct deposit for my claims reimbursement. All-in-all it is no wonder Healthy Paws is rated the #1 pet insurance year after year. I have and will continue to refer my... Read More

I have an 11 year old poodle and had Healthy Paws pet insurance for the last 4 years. Prior to having this insurance, when my little Bella was very young she ended up breaking her leg due to an accident which I had to pay money out of pocket for. A year later, she ended up breaking the leg again due to inadequate healing. I spent probably over $4,000-5,000 for that whole ordeal. Ever since Bella was young I did have pet insurance for her such as ASPCA and Gopetplan. However, when she broke her leg there was a lapse in coverage. I just remember how much of a pain it was to process claims when I had to deal with those insurance companies. I looked into Healthy Paws and decided to enroll... Read More

Healthypaws is by far the best pet health insurance we have discovered!! Number one, they care!! Healthypaws is the ONLY pet health insurance company we have found the covers BOTH!! Congenital and hereditary conditions. I was so heart breaking when we lost our beloved Shar Pei boy and a double heart break was when we discovered... At the time... the pet health insurance we had, would not cover a hereditary conditions. We were sad and hurt. Until we found Healthypaws. Healthypaws is the best and I would have no other insurance take care of our three furbabies. Healthypaws prices are fare and reasonable you can find cheaper service but none are better and give you the confidence... Read More

I researched a lot of pet insurance companies before landing on Healthy Paws, and we have not been disappointed. They have covered many significant procedures on our 2 dogs, including an ACL surgery, as well as an expensive monthly medication. Their customer service is extremely professional and caring, and reimbursement has been very prompt. The value and peace of mind we receive for our for babies for the monthly premium is 100% worth it! We will always turn to Healthy Paws for all of pets, current and future.

The type of insurance that a pet owner dreams of .... It really shows when a company does business because they truly care and that's what Healthy Paws, proved to me. I've been with them for 5 years . My dog Romeo was always pretty healthy even though we found out he has epilepsy a few years ago . Recently though we found he had a mass that needed to be removed and a couple more procedures that demanded surgery . The total was more then I could afford to advance since I'm not currently working. When I called them to see what could be done, I was told to put them in contact with my vet to get the total of the procedure . Within a few days the surgery was approved, I didn't have to... I recently had to rush my Cavalier King Charles to the Vet emergency care facilities due to heat related problems. She had to have surgery and stay for a couple of days. I'm glad to write that she is back to normal and very healthy at this point. As you can imagine, my Vet invoice was very substantial. I uploaded it to Healthy Paws and the responded very quickly. They paid the entire bill except for the deductible and exam. It was a very stressful time and not having to worry about the bill took so much stress off. I have had Healthy Paws insurance for a number of years and very pleased with their professionalism. They also reached out after Scarlett was home asking about her... Read More

Hello, my dog is 9.5 years old and I've had pet insurance on him since the age of 2. To be honest up until about 8 years old I never used it as I never had a reason as my dog has always been a healthy boy. Though in the last 18 months it's been utilized multiple times. He has run into some health concerns and having the pet insurance truly makes having the appropriate care a reality. Just in the last month with blood tests, ultra sounds, CT scans and other diagnostics the vet bills have totaled $3200 in 4 weeks. The pet insurance plan I have with Healthy Paws is a 90/10 plan, so of that $3200 I have had to only cover a little over $300 out of my own pocket. I've been with Healthy Paws... Read More

My 8 year old black lab has been insured by Healthy Paws since he was 5 years old. He had some neck and back issues last year and his chiropractic appointments were covered! In May of this year I noticed a growth in his mouth. It turned out to be cancer, melanoma. He has had 3 surgeries and is currently under the continuing care of Cornell Oncology. Healthy Paws has been absolutely wonderful throughout this entire ordeal. Their customer service is excellent, the claims are processed really quickly, they keep you updated while you wait, and once the claim is approved reimbursement comes in the mail. I am a practicing small animal veterinarian in Syracuse, NY. I have pet insurance for my... Read More
