Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have been a Healthy Paws Pet Insurance customer for six years. I signed up shortly after adopting my dog Delta in early 2012. My first experience of using Healthy Paws/filing a claim was for Delta in 2013 after he tore his ACL. The customer service is second-to-none. I thought I was grateful then...little did I know how grateful I would be today. A few weeks ago, out of nowhere, Delta fell gravely ill. He was running a fever of 106, his platelet counts had plummeted to such a low range that he was at risk for spontaneous hemorrhaging, he was anemic, not eating and very lethargic with labored breathing. This all happened very suddenly and within a 24-hour period. I was an emotional... Read More

Healthy paws has been a life saver for our family. All I do is take a picture of the invoice through their awesome app and then receive my money back in a timely manner with no questions asked. Easy straight forward insurance I will get with any future dog. Recommended to all my friends. Thank you healthy paws!

I have been a member of the Healthy Paws since 2013. During the time, my Miniature Dachshund had a back surgery, two mass removals, and a few other health issues that I couldn't have afforded without the Healthy Paws. I also had a Pomeranian who suffered from the heart murmur. In a couple years, we had to take her to the emergency room about four times because of her condition and we didn't have to think about the cost a single time because of the Healthy Paws. I really appreciate how the Healthy Paws helped us to treat my dogs as family.

Healthy Paws were so helpful and quick to respond when I had an emergency with my 1.5 year old cat. It was wonderful to be able to focus on getting my fur-baby better instead if figuring out how I could afford it! I am so thankful that they were supportive and made the process so easy!

I enrolled my Newfoundland and Bernese Mountain Dog a couple of years ago. They have both had medical issues, with the most recent being herniated discs in my Bernese. Healthy Paws covered the MRI/diagnosis promptly and even emailed to check on Tripp's progress. I spent months researching pet insurance companies and found HP to cover non-traditional treatments where most other companies do not. Due to that, we are using acupuncture, laser treatments, and Chinese herbs to avoid/postpone back surgery. Without HP, we would be struggling to afford the best care possible for our dogs. Heartedly recommend!

Healthy Paws is wonderful. If you are looking for pet insurance, we highly recommend this company and have been very pleased with our experience in the past 2 years. The monthly rate is reasonable for the service we get. Everything you read about what they offer is honest and they don’t find reasons to not cover legitimate vet bills. We and our vet have been very impressed by their quick response to claims. Our corgi takes allergy meds that HP has covered as well as major procedures. We can’t say enough good things about Healthy Paws. It has saved us financial worry so that we could put our pet’s health first.

Nothing more difficult than facing illness or injury with a beloved pet. We are owned by Dobermans, a magnificent breed but not without troublesome health issues. Our seemingly healthy and vibrant 2-1/2 year old recently exhibited worrisome lab values via bloodwork. Expensive diagnostics were recommended via specialist advice, including ultrasound and biopsy surgery. The worry over our young beautiful dobergirl was enormous...the financial expense daunting. Healthy Paws came through for us, a potential "pre-existing condition" issue resolved seamlessly. These are real people, not just number crunchers. Best decision we ever made was to insure our dobergirl with Healthy Paws. We will... Read More

We are so happy to have Healthy Paws pet insurance for both of our babies! Our youngest, Cooper, recently required surgery and Healthy Paws was with us every step of the way! Their online claims filing is so easy and we had a check in hand within 2 weeks after his surgery for all of the covered expenses, as outlined on their website. There were no hidden exclusions and no complicated procedures. We even received a follow up email checking on how he was doing! The best part of Healthy Paws is the peace of mind signing up with them gives you. Because of them, we were able to concentrate on taking care of Cooper, without worrying about the vet bills. We highly recommend Healthy Paws to... Read More

I am so thankful I switched to Healthy Paws pet insurance. I’ve carried pet insurance for years and one problem I’ve had in choosing policy benefits is that an upper limit you find adequate today may be totally inadequate 10 years from now as veterinary costs increase with inflation. If you wanted to then increase your benefits, even with the insurer you have, it would be necessary to get a whole new policy, and any illnesses your pet had in the past years would be excluded as pre-existing conditions. A friend suggested their insurer to me, Healthy Paws which has no upper limit on benefits. They do not, however, cover office visit, or consultation fees. They explained to me that this is...
