How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Hands down the best! Never any issues with a claim. We have been with Healthy Paws since we got our dog over 5 years ago and it was the best decision we have ever made. Our dog has always been healthy with small issues like worms (yuck), ear infections, and cysts. This month however we had a really scary issue where our poor dog had a stomach blockage and had to be hospitalized for two nights with a feeding tube, catheter, and IV. The entire time he was in the hospital we said thank goodness for Healthy Paws! We were able to focus on getting our dog back to health instead of on the bills that were mounting to thousands of dollars. Healthy Paws customer service truly cares about the... Read More

I signed up for HealthyPaws pet insurance a couple of years ago on the recommendation of a friend. I didn't expect to need it, but since my friend's dog suddenly required tens of thousands of dollars of vet care it seemed like a wise thing to do. Three years later, my dog was diagnosed with thyroid cancer requiring specialty vet services including major surgery. HealthyPaws has been amazing throughout this. I have 80% coverage and filing a claim online was very easy and working with their representatives to get the proper documentation from my vet was simple and reassuring. They even offered to call my vet directly and help identify the specific records they needed submitted. My claims... Read More

Healthy paws is amazing. When our dog tore his ACL, they took the worry out of everything. We were able to focus on Lenny, instead of on the cost of the surgery. Then six months later, when our dog tore his other ACL, healthy paws was there to help. They covered the cost of both surgeries, and checked in later to see how he was doing. Healthy paws really helped us to take the best care of our dog. Healthy paws is amazing. When our dog tore his ACL, they took the worry out of everything. We are so so thankful for Healthy Paws! Our two year old pup had surgery and unfortunately experienced a difficult recovery. We were absolutely devastated and unsure whether or not she would pull through. As difficult as all of this was, having Healthy Paws and not having to worry about the financial aspect of her care, made everything that much easier. I felt better knowing that as long as she was able to push through we wouldn’t have to give up on her. Whatever test or treatment she needed, we were able to do. Our sweet girl is doing much better now, and we have already received a check from Healthy Paws with no hassle at all. We can't recommend Healthy Paws enough!

After tons of comparative shopping and research, we chose Healthy Paws 2.5 years ago to cover our two Great Danes when they were 6 months old. The Policy was clear and easy to understand. The coverage as compared to other providers, along with the rate, is why we made the decision to go with Healthy Paws. The Customer Service team was great in answering any questions I had. We purchased the insurance hoping we would never need to use it. Unfortunately, one of our dogs (Vegas) was diagnosed with Addison's disease when she was about a year old. Her treatment requires costly monthly injections, other daily medications, and frequent Vet visits for lab work. Another condition Vegas had... Read More

I cannot rave enough about having my pets insured with Healthy Paws. My 4 year old Shih Tzu/Bichon mix, Reese, in less than 2 months had to undergo 2 big surgeries. The first one was a Cystotomy (bladder stone removal surgery) in October 2018 and the second one was for a Portosystemic Shunt surgery (congenital liver shunt) in November 2018. The stones from the first surgery were sent for analysis and their composition turned out to be Urate (Ammonia) stones which are very uncommon for Reese’s breed. Further diagnostics revealed that he had a liver that was not functioning 100% which is the reason why the stones had formed. We are hoping this fixes the issue and Reese is done with his share... Great company to work with. Very easy to submit claims I can do it right on my cell phone. It takes me about a minute to submit them. There is no wheeling and dealing if it qualifies they cover it. They are not your average insurance company they are superior. I have 3 dogs and covering them was not an option. One of the dogs is an English Bulldog who alone as a breed have a lot of medical problems. We had a few things arise with her and Healthy Paws was with us every step of the way. They covered everything they said they would and I had the check in my hand within a week. Thank you Healthy Paws for being a great pet insurance company and making a trip to the vet not so scary
