Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I didn't have insurance with my first yorkie and spent probably $5,000 in the last two years of her life due to kidney failure. Upon getting my next yorkie, I immediately purchased insurance. I thought I wouldn't need it until Lulu was older much to my surprise. Last September I noticed she was exhibiting symptoms of UTI. Sure enough and 7 months later of trying to figure out the underlying cause, she was diagnosed with MVD. She had to have surgery which cost $1,800. Healthy Paws covered 90% of it otherwise I would not have been able to have afforded it for a few months. I will ALWAYS have insurance and Healthy Paws customer service and reimbursement process is the best! Thanks HP!!

I never thought I would actually need to use my pet insurance. It was purchased for peace of mind. When an unforeseen rare diagnosis occurred (requiring costly tests) Healthy Paws was there! They were there for support- financial reimbursement and concern for what we were experiencing.

I purchased Healthy Paws Insurance like everyone else hoping to never need it. Unfortunately my lab mix ate something she wasn't supposed to and I ended up with over $3k in vet bills. Had it not been for insurance, I would not have been able to afford to take care both my financial obligations and my sweet Sophie. Thanks to having insurance with Healthy Paws I was able to focus on my furbaby instead of the financial burden of this event. Their customer service is stellar. Occasionally I did have to wait on hold during peak times but that was offset by the fact they are available on weekends as well. Claims process is straight forward and efficient. I can't recommend this company enough.

I highly recommend Healthy Paws pet insurance for their first rate service. They have been a Godsend for our two miniature schnauzers who have both faced major illnesses. Claims processing is super easy by computer or on a phone app, taking no more than 5 minutes. Reimbursements are very fast, and they don’t quibble on coverage. They are very straightforward on everything. They even send emails checking on our pets after treatment. I will continue to use them for any and all pets.

we've had pet insurance for a while, and, luckily, never had cause to use it. Suddenly in the middle of the night one of our dogs started vomiting and peeing uncontrollably. In a panic we rushed him to the vet and proceded to wait on pins and needles as we went through a wide variety of tests trying to figure out what was wrong - each one more expensive than the last. We started to have incredibly difficult conversations about what would happen when we couldn't afford any more tests? And where exactly was that line? Our experience with Healthy Paws has been beyond what we expected, in a great way. They were always responsive to our questions, true to their word, and not only that, they were asking how our dog was doing as our journey progressed, which to us is fantastic. Our German shepherd puppy Kuma started favoring a leg when he was just a little guy. Our vet and surgeon diagnosed him with elbow dysplasia at the age of about 9 months. Facing the increasing pain, lameness and decreased quality of life for our puppy, we chose to proceed with the recommend surgery for him. Healthy Paws has been beyond incredible in all aspects of customer service, and claim support. My dog Bodhi had torn his left ACL, and had to have TTA surgery to fix it. The surgery cost over $3,000 and was not only difficult to see Bodhi in pain, although I would do anything for him, the thought of spending a over $3,000 was tough to swallow. The entire surgery was covered by Healthy Paws. Filing a claim was as easy as taking a picture of the vet bill, and uploading it to the claim site, and a few days later it was all processed.
