Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have trusted Healthy Paws with my pet insurance since I first got my sole dog, Daisy. Pet insurance was a must as a college student with a dog, as funds were tight and my dog has a medical record like a CVS receipt (unreasonably long). Healthy Paws was affordable and always provided quick review, response, and payment of my claims and when living paycheck to paycheck it was a necessity so I could give my dog the care she deserved. Fast forward to this year, Daisy was diagnosed with Cancer and had to have an expensive surgery. Healthy Paws, as usual, provides quick and excellent service during my claims and then personally reaches out to check in on Daisy’s recovery. She is doing... Read More

Healthy Paws was affordable for a few years. We started our pets policy in 2017 for $33 per month. We saw gradual increases at first, then 30% increase, then 50% increase, and this year our policy jumped from $133 per month to $255 per month. We’ve never filed a claim, so we queried Healthy Paws. They informed us premium increases were beyond their control and set by our states insurance regulator (verified this is false). Ultimately, as your pet ages and your likelihood of filing a claim increases, Healthy Paws will no longer want to insure you, so get ready for astronomical increases. A shady business model at best, for old pets

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
We appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family since 2017. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase. Your premium increase is influenced by two primary factors, the increased age of your pet, and the cost of veterinary care services reflected in the claims paid in your specific state. Your premiums have gone up because total claim payments to pet parents, among other things, have increased faster than premiums paid by all pet parents in your state. As a result, the premiums for insurance for all pets in your state needs to be increased so that your insurer can continue to provide this type of insurance. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed with, and approved by, each state’s insurance regulator, which reflect the cost of treatment advances in veterinary medicine, and characteristics of the individual pet, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region where the pet resides. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website.

I was very skeptical of purchasing health insurance for our dogs because I thought the reimbursement process would be difficult, and I assumed many charges would not be covered. However, after my previous dog suffered a long and very serious illness which required very costly veterinary specialty care, I decided to enroll my current dog with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance as a precaution. We were lucky that we didn’t need to make any claims for several years but just recently had to make a claim when my dog tore her cruciate ligament and required surgery. After submitting my claim, I expected I would need to provide additional support documentation, and the review cycle would be lengthy. I... Read More

Healthy Paws has been amazing with my sick pup. He's had many emergency vet visits over the past few months, including needing surgery and being admitted, and as well as specialist visits and an endoscopy/colonoscopy from what we now know is inflammatory bowel disease. Healthy Paws made cost a non-factor for us and getting him the best possible care was an easy decision. Filing claims was incredibly easy and all were paid within just a few days, no questions asked. They even followed up with me via email after one of his procedures to see how he was feeling. We've had Healthy Paws for about 6.5 years and always had a positive experience but the past few months have really solidified... Read More

We’ve been customers of Healthy Paws for over four years and have nothing but good things to say about this company. They have been very responsive and provide an intuitive means for claims filing. Most recently our dog experienced a serious leg injury that required surgery. We were amazed at how quickly we were reimbursed for most of the cost!

What a great pet insurance company! Have been with them since I got two puppy pug brothers in 2012. Sadly...to say the least...I lost one last year, and they were extremely kind and compassionate in sympathizing with my grief. My pugs have accumulated significant vet bills over the years and especially recently because they mean everything to me and I always seek the best possible care. Healthy Paws has a very slick, easy online claim submission process and communicates back very quickly via email. Claims have been adjudicated and direct deposit made to my bank account astonishingly fast! A couple of days! I finish by saying I wholeheartedly recommend pet owners go with this company for... My cat had a bowel obstruction and had to have emergency surgery. The ease of the claims process was greatly appreciated. Between the awesome vet and Healthy Paws all claims were processed in a timely fashion. I have had HP for a few years and this was the first time I needed to use it. I am so grateful that I had pet insurance. Healthy Paws exceeded my expectations in all areas.

We're so glad we elected for pet insurance through Healthy Paws a few years back. Claims are easy to submit, customer service has been wonderful, and checks for the four or five reimbursements we've received to date have arrived within a week of submitting the claim. Above all, we've saved immensely. Our dog had to have unexpected knee surgery last month that cost several thousand dollars; our Healthy Paws policy, as promised, covered eighty percent. Monthly premiums increase as our dog ages, of course, but so far, the peace of mind and savings have been well worth the monthly investment.

Healthy paws has been a helpful and caring company for me and my dogs. My youngest dog Melita needed cataract surgery-due to an underdeveloped lens and thanks to HP we could afford this surgery and improve my girls quality of life! She can see and we got the best care possible. They also emailed to check and see how she was doing personally with such genuine concern. Summiting the claims were easy and the payments very fast. Its priceless to have less issues when dealing with insurance compaines-my only complaint is we cant get people insurance thru them too! ;) Kelly Robinson

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Healthy Paws has provided exceptional support for our two Cunucus (Arubian dogs). Tiana underwent TPLO surgery on her left knee in April 2023 and her right knee in June 2024. The reimbursement process was swift, and customer service has been excellent. Monthly premiums are reasonable with minimal annual increases. Their coverage has been comprehensive, and I would not have been able to afford approximately $15,000 for the two surgeries Tiana required without their support. Healthy Paws Insurance covered around 80% of all expenses, including medication and follow-ups. Refunds were deposited into my account within three days of submitting the necessary medical...
