Choice Home Warranty is a New Jersey-based company founded in 2008 which offers services contracts. Their plans offer protection against the cost of repair or replacement of major systems and appliances in the home via several plans. Choice Home Warranty offers existing homeowners two plans, each of which cover a mix of systems and appliances. The primary difference between its Total plan and its Basic plan is that refrigerators, washers and dryers, and air conditioning systems are not included in the Basic Plan. Optional coverage for such items as pools and spas, well pumps, and septic systems is available for an additional fee. The company states that, in any case, its total liability for any single item is capped at $3000, but lower limits do apply to some covered items.

We requested a quote for a single family home of less than 5000 square feet in a small midwestern city. The premium for Choice Home Warranty's Basic was $47.85 per month and the premium for its Total pan was $54.95 per month. With the cost difference between the two plans being only about $7 per month, to our mind, the Total plan a better value overall because it includes coverage for three of the most common appliances: refrigerators, washers, and dryers. It also includes coverage for air conditioning systems.

The company's co-pay for a service call is $85, slightly less than most comparable companies. The co-pay may be reduced further with special discounts and promotions.

Cancellation Policy

The contract shall be non-cancelable by the company except for nonpayment of contract fees or service fees, fraud or misrepresentation of facts by the customer, or by agreement between client and company. Customers may cancel within the first 30 days of the order date for a full refund of the paid contract fees. If canceled after 30 days, the customer shall be entitled to a pro rata refund of the paid contract fee for the unexpired term, less a $50 administrative fee and any service costs incurred by the company.

My tech was very new to Choice, and was unable to answer some of my questions. To the best of my understanding, I believe he submitted my problem to you for diagnosis and to find out if you are going to fix it. That was three days ago, but I have not received any response back from Choice.

I had to bring 4 different technicians to get a final repair on my dishwasher. The last technician ran a series of diagnostics and identified that a control board and an attached UI board were the root problem. He called in for authorization and some person in an unreachable department decided that they would only authorize the control board. That UI is a standard part that was failing and some mystery person decided that the part was considered 'a modification'. This department did not ever see the dishwasher, did not run any tests and had no reason to deny replacement of the UI board other than to save Choice Warranty a few dollars. Unfortunately, once again, I have had a horrible experience with Choice. Choice lowballs their customers if a replacement unit is required. They will only provide an astronomically low amount of $$ and you must replace the item yourself. They "no longer provide replacements". So for them to say $$ in lieu of replacement - that is totally incorrect!!! I asked for a replacement and was told by the case manager they don't do that. I asked for the matter to be elevated and she said she was the final authority. Since I have a 3 year policy that expires in 2023, I should be able to get a refund on the unused year(s). The tech sent to the house and the company he works for were great. Choice Home Warranty is not going to pay for all the repairs that were identified as necessary. I would never recommend Choice Warranty.

Communication is good. Copayments are high. Sometimes, the repair personnel they find are not that good. A better scrutiny of repair companies would make things better.

The repair man was punctual, professional and knowledgeable. The entire repair from beginning to end took an hour or less. My claim was quickly dispatched, and I actually got the call from the repair man before I got the email saying when he’d show up. I didn’t expect my claim to be taken care so quickly. Very happy

I have made one claim for a malfunctioning water heater and the experience is dismal. The claim was denied because the tank was leaking. I do not know what the serviceman has reported, but the tank is not leaking and no matter what I said it was a dead end. They would not even send someone for a second look. When I appealed, your reps are never available on the phone, always a voicemail and they never respond. Finally, when I reached someone, the woman was dismissive and only talks for 15 minutes.
