How Do We Rate PetFirst?

Breakdown

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

PetFirst offers an enrollment process that is easier than most. They do not require a vet exam, and accident coverage starts in 24 hours.

Additionally, the company has no upper age limit on enrollment, and no waiting periods for a few conditions many other providers outright just don't cover.

PetFirst also has a healthy pet discount for every year you don't make a claim. The upper tier plans, however, are on the pricier side, and the company does not offer unlimited coverage.

PetFirst Coverage

Coverage - 5 / 5

Petfirst offers accident and illness coverage that is pretty much industry standard for the price.

However, what sets them apart is they have no waiting periods for hip dysplasia, patella luxations or orthapedic conditions. The company also offers a wellness plan as an add on.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Petfirst does not restrict you to per incident or per illness limits. However, the company does have annual limits. They let you choose $5,000, $10,000, and $20,000.

While the $5,000 limit plan has a monthly deductible in the average pet insurance range, the two higher limit plans get pricey.

In fact, there are unlimited plans we review that tend to cost less than Petfirst's $20,000 limit plan.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Petfirst gives you the option of setting your reimbursement at 70%, 80%, and 90%. This is a consistent feature of the best pet insurance providers.

Deductibles - 4.6 / 5

Petfirst offers flexible deductibles of $50, $100, $250, and $500. Not many other plans offer the option of such a low deductible.

Choosing it would translate into higher premiums, but it could be a valuable option if it fits your particular situation, i.e. you know you can afford to fit the monthly premium into your budget but are not sure you'd have the extra cash on hand to pay a higher deductible.

Pricing: How much does PetFirst cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Petfirst's lower annual limit plans offer pretty much average monthly deductibles when compared to similar plans.

However, their higher limit plans are on the pricier side.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Petfirst has a particularly painless and lenient enrollment process when compared to other companies. Firstly they do not require a vet exam.

Accident coverage begins midnight the day of enrollment and illness 14 days after. There is no fee to cancel.

And lastly, Petfirst is one of only a handful of companies that has no upper age limit. Cats and dogs of any age can be covered for life.

Claims & Service

Extras - 4.5 / 5

Petfirst stands out two ways in the claims department, they offer healthy pet discounts every year you don't make a claim, and they do not increase your premium due to amount of claims made.

The claims procedure is the standard process of paying your vet bill up front, then submitting the claims form with all the relevant invoices and receipts.

My pet has 2 chronic conditions (bronchitis and heart disease) and Petfirst has covered all services, as well as all medications that he requires daily. I paid the initial deductible when he was initially diagnosed, and they have since covered all services (minus the 10% I pay out of pocket). Petfirst has saved me THOUSANDS this year alone. Claims have always been processed quickly (within days).

PetFirst insurance is great. We’ve had it for all three of our cats for a number of years (oldest is 10) and have always found them to be responsive, prompt and fair. Having pet insurance allows us to make sure we NEVER have to allow money into the conversation when it comes to our pets’ health. Never. We’ve watched people in the emergency vet waiting room have to make these decisions and it’s gut wrenching. I should say we’ve got one pet with IBS and another with Congestive Heart Failure so we’re talking some experience with pet insurance here.

We adopted our puppy from Pet Smart/Yuma Humane Society. She was exposed to Distemper as we found out after her firs shots. PetFirst gave us the first month free. With in that month we lost our fur baby. PetFirst refunded our first month payment and paid for her medical bills. They were very kind and caring about our loss, and gave us excellent service. We plan to use them for our current pet. Charles & Nancy

Yes, I have PetFirst Pet insurance on both of my Yorkies, aged 13 and 4 years old. I’m very happy with my coverage and the payout for the claims that I’ve submitted. Their employees answer the phone promptly and courteously and are knowledgeable in their field.

Horrible service. Adopted a dog and we were given Petfirst Insurance to cover any issues within the first 30 days of adopting. Well...our dog had worms in his poo, so we took him to the vet to get him fixed and de-wormed. Filed a claim with Petfirst for the Dr visit and the meds and we were denied. I called to find out why. First I was told bc it was a preventative visit. So I went to the Vet and got the papers showing that it was in fact not preventative but to fix the worm issue. Called back and was denied...for a preexisting condition because I created an account and took him to the vet the same day. That was the whole point of the insurance was to take care of... Read More

My experience with pet first was terrible. I have a$250 per episode deductible. My dog got hit by a car and so I was at the vet almost every two weeks as the vet worked to diagnose and treat her. It was the first time I had to submit a claim, so I had to submit mountains of paperwork, 12 months of medical records that had to be acquired from different vets, SOAP notes, itemized receipts ect. I bundled all the separate visits into a package and sent it. The treatment occurred over a period of several months and PetFirst refused to reimburse the earlier claims (and more expensive claims) because the initial claims were outside the 90 day time limit. I am canceling this policy and... Read More

Hands down the WORST pet insurance company! Submitting claims is nearly impossible. They will keep requesting adoption documentation (even when you’ve called roughly 50 times and spoke with 5 different claims reps and told them all the same thing) THAT WE RESCUED OUR PUPPY therefore we DO NOT have adoption paperwork. This company is lucky that there getting half a star out of me because of giving them a ZERO was possible, they’d get it. Communication is nearly nonexistent at PetFirst; they say they will note something down but will still request the same thing over and over again. They have sent my vet emails and myself emails requesting documentation that we simply do not have (we... Read More

First let me apologize for the length of this post. I want everyone to know what a ripoff this company is through my direct experience with them and I want to make sure I communicate the facts, all the facts, correctly. A couple months ago I adopted a puppy (10 months old) and had him chipped, took out a Home Away plan should he get lost. Somehow, PetFirst Pet Insurance became aware of my adoption and contacted me offering a one month free pet insurance plan for my puppy, naturally hoping I would continue the coverage after a month. I have never paid for pet insurance for our fur babies and thought why not take advantage of at least the free month. After the new puppy was home for just a... Read More
