A stair lift company sold me a Harmar stair lift for my outdoor stairwell and I’ve had nothing but problems with it. The unit has sensors in it which stop the chair from working after it starts. My 250 lb. Disabled mother has been stuck in the middle of a stairwell so many times. The chair lift also operates with a cable system. The cable drops down frequently causing the chair to stop working. I had it repaired so many times and I’m finally replacing it because it just won’t work. I tried calling the manufacturer to troubleshoot it, and they will only speak to dealers. Horrible product and horrible customer service!
This product is well designed mechanically but the electronics/electrical iterations are simply awful. I can't go into all the intricate details of poor control characteristics. I will dwell, however, on a major design flaw that is unforgivable. The AGM batteries used in this device have a characteristic short life of about 2 years. With this in mind, the batteries must be considered as relatively (with respect to other components of the lift) non-permanent consumables. Replacement of the batteries requires virtual disassembly of the top accoutrements and the shroud of the unit so that it is virtually impossible for an average user or overseer to perform this task. I've been installing this stairlift for 8 years, most of the complaints on this page should be directed at the installation company, not the manufacturer. Harmar is just like Ford or Chevy, they make the product, the dealership sells you the vehicle and provides the service. Are Harmar Stairlifts perfect 100% of the time, no, none of them are, but they stand behind what they manufacture, in some aspects harmar is the best option available.
Do NOT buy a stairlift from this company. THEY ARE CLOSED ON WEEKENDS! Stairlift has had constant problems! If it stops working on a Friday night, NO ONE CAN FIX IT or even call you back until Monday. What good is an answering service? They're CLOSED ALL WEEKEND! Worthless piece of garbage!
I have had this for 2 years and the rollers on the bottom of my helix , I have tried to get the 2 rollers that are 3 inches long with the bearings molded into the roller , i do believe i could put those 2 rollers off and put them back on with no problems , I have called them and they want 250.00 to come and look at it , now for a lot cheaper than that i believe i could fix it , if I could buy those 2 rollers , I live on fixed income and darn sure don't have that kind of money for them to come and say we don't have that part , we will order it and will come back for another 250.00
Do NOT buy this product. Read the reviews - I don’t know how they they have 4.5 stars since most reviews are bad. We have had problem after problem. First the chair kept tripping the auto shut off, I had to troubleshoot and fix myself since repair was unavailable for days. The seat has mildew, even though I clean it with upholstery cleaner per the instructions. I mean my boat seats never had mildew, why not use marine grade vinyl for outdoor units, especially here in super humid FL? Now, the unit is getting no power, I’ve attempted to reset it but it’s dead as a door nail. Harmar isn’t open until Monday and I can’t reach a repair professional, so my partner is stuck in the house all... Read More
Disappointed in my Harmar Pinnacle Premium stair lift. The seat will not stay in the upright position. I had this fixed while the lift was under the one year warranty and how, four months later, it is happening again. I tried to tighten the seat hinge but that did not solve the premium. Since Harmar will not talk to you or give you any advice, you have to go to the dealer who wants $100 just to come and look at the problem. Next time I will buy a product from a company that has direct customer support instead of pushing customers off onto dealers. People told me to buy the Bruno but the salesman convinced me otherwise.
Be forewarned:
We have had serious customer service issues with this company.
They have not at this point honored our warranty to repair/reinstall a unit.
Our authorized installer does not answer his phone.
In the meantime while waiting for authorized repairs, my mother who is wheelchair bound has not been able to get out of the house unless we contact 911. Which we have had to do several times.
Unfortunately I could never recommend this company
The seat no longer stays folded in the "up" position, which seriously takes away from the slim profile. I called the installer, who is a second party to this and whose business is too far away to justify a repair charge. Compared to the much more serious problems in other reviews this seems not so terrible…but it also indicates a certain lack of quality. We are using the seat belt to hold the seat up but I don't want to keep doing that because it might stress the seatbelt. The installer's suggestion to "use a bungee cord" just seems irresponsible when we've only had the lift for six months. He says this happens frequently. I don't understand why it can't be repaired. It's a hinge,... Read More
Newly installed outdoor stairlift stopped working within 3 months. Had it repaired and stopped working again within 2 months! Was Installed and serviced by the Stairlift Guys of Sarasota.
I purchased a Harmar stairlift in 2014 for my mother who is disabled due to a nerve and arthritic condition. She struggles climbing and descending stairs, getting into an automobile as a passenger, dressing herself, etc,. She has had so much trouble with this stairlift. It would not hold a charge, the battery became incompatible with the charger; which should not be our fault to pay for its replacement, the lift completely shut down, the handle that allows the seat to rotate stopped working, the seat does not stay up, the speed has significantly slowed down, it stopped in the middle of the stairs and she had to tap on the go switch several times for it to move. She actually had to get... Read More
Had our SL600 installed in July 2018. It has been used a total of 4 times and it is now stuck at the bottom of the stairs. The operators manual is useless for trouble shooting. The installer will not be able to get to it for 3 weeks. I tried contacting Harmar, not even a response. Terrible customer support. DO NOT buy this brand.
Stairlift lower charging rail has cracked. I have only owned it for about 4.5 years. They want 1800.00 to repair it. It only cost 4200.00 new. Not a happy customer.
Looks like you need a Bruno Stairlift. Great customer service and are made in AMERICA- you wont regret it!
John George did a remarkable job in installing the stair lift, however, after a few months I get a lot of stops and go problems.Recently I get stops and no go. After much fiddling, I get it to go again. This keeps continuing and I wonder when it will completely stop. I am 93 yrs old and can not climb the stairs. Please advise me as to how this problem can be resolved. The serial # of my lift isASCUP 160818- 00001.
If I get no satisfaction the Veteran Administration will be informed.

This is a review of Harmar Customer Service Only. On behalf of my church which has three Harmar chair lifts, I repeatedly attempted to contact Harmar about a service issue with one of the lifts. Harmar's documentation and troubleshooting did not address the problem, and nor did a service call from the original installer. Only on the third of 3 calls was I able to speak to a human. I was only able to request technical support before the customer service agent asked if I was a "Dealer". The instant I said "no" I was transferred, without a word, to a generic voicemail where I left my contact info and support request. 4 days later my call has yet to be returned, and a subsequent call...
