Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been a customer of American Home Shield for the past 5 years. I have used their service 4 times( 3 for plumbing issues and 1 for HVAC) They have awesome and qualified service providers. The first 3 times I notified AHS for help on service, I actually spoke to someone. This past time, which was 3 days ago, I was on hold for over an hour. I did go online and was successful in getting a response. I was able to contact the provider they selected for me. I got a appointment for 2 days later. The plumbing technician that came out was very professional and knowledgeable. I was very pleased.

As a long time customer for AHS (over a decade), overall the + have outweighed the -. However I recently submitted a service request for a pump on our pool and it was denied. The problem for me is that AHS replaced the same pump in 2012 and now will not perform the repair. When I appealed with the local pool repair company they could not explain why request denied and really did not know how to file a formal complaint with AHS. My experience with speaking directly with AHS has not been that great and do not appreciate my denied request is dumped back on me to investigate/fight. AHS needs to rework their approach to customer service.

We've used home shield A LOT now. We call, it's covered, it gets repaired. Seriously, from A/C issues to garbage disposale stuff, it's been worry free. A dish washer replacement at one point. I don't konw how people sleep at night without a home warranty like AHS. I sleep really well! Thanks AHS!

While the online system is useful for basic problems it is almost impossible to get ahold of any human to actually talk to for their programs. I waited on hold for 3 hours to be hung up on by the company then there’s no option to talk to an associate when you call in.

Don't look at the ratings folks - American Home Shield must do something to get them high. Almost every comment is terrible so they scores can't be perfect. My experience with this company has been terrible. If you need help, expect to wait days to get anything. When you do get something expect your claim to be denied (they will find a reason). If you want to cancel - expect a cancellation fee even if that is not what they told you when you signed up. Run the other way as fast as you can!!!!!

We have been without a refrigerator for over a month The technician has visited our home 3 times to order new equipment and each time finds an additional problem. In the meantime, I called customer service on Friday and after an hour of waiting was told the system was updating and that I needed to call back. Called back today and hold times exceeded an hour. This is becoming a part time job that’s costing me money instead of paying out. In times where we are attempting to limit exposure, we are having to eat out too frequently, which equals an additional expense. Enough is enough. Admit we need a new fridge and cut a check so we can be done with this issue.

I am customer for American Home Shield more than two year. I am so surprise of their treatments for their customer. Please take a time for reading my story for fixing water leakage with American Home Shield. And if possible, please let my story people know it. There was water leak from air conditioner at July 10 2020. And I requested service at the same day and paid 120$ as a deductible. And American Home Shield assigned a local aircon service company (consolidated Mechanical cont. INC). A technician from the local company visited my home at July 14. He just went up roof where air conditioner is placed and came down. He said “ I can’t find water leakage from aircon” even though water... Read More

This company must be a joke, right? They were phenomenal, having service providers come out on more than one occasion when we had appliance issues. Then, one of our appliances actually went out and we needed to replace, have been waiting on hold for days and can’t get ANYONE to answer the phone. So basically I’ve been paying a monthly premium and then deductible for the service, for absolutely nothing, because I guarantee they won’t make contact to replace my appliance like my contract promises they will. So pissed.
