Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

My review of one star is based on the need for American home sheild to hold their vendors to a higher standard regarding timeliness and quality of work for members. I have had several vendors with horrible customer service and lack of experience in their field . I have waited 3 weeks for a response on my HVAC system replacement in the hot month of August and in December of this year waited a month for a completion of my hot water heater replacement . There is a need for process improvement within the company regarding the relationship with the vendors and how the operate with the members of American home shield .

I have been without a dryer for over a month now and waited on hold yesterday for 20 minutes then the call was disconnected. Only for me to call back and wait on hold for over an hour. The CS I spoke with was very nice and seemed to be as helpful as possible but there still is no resolution and I haven't received a call/email from the applicance company or American Home Shield.

This is by far the WORST home warranty company I've ever used. I was without a fridge for 3 weeks. Parts were ordered and arrived on time but the repair company kept delaying. I didn't have working AC for over a week in Texas, in the hottest time of the year. There have been multiple screw ups including using unqualified, poorly trained employees/contractors, inability to follow your own policies, no regard for requests as to which number to call (despite it being requested multiple times), poor work, and the inability to ever make contact with management. I have spent over 8 hours on the phone trying to get my repairs completed in the last week alone. Hold times are insane. I'm amazed... Read More

Just spent a half hour on hold with their customer service. Someone answered, asked me to hold, and transferred me back to the starting automated menu. 10/10 would not use these crooks.

I have never had a problem with American home shield. I'm very happy with their service. When their phone lines are too busy (since they are very popular), I have the ability to log on through my computer or smart phone. I'm thankful for their service, their contractors that come out and do the work, and that they are willing to provide me a service contract even though I live in a small condo. Thank you AHS!

I had discontinued this service after experiencing a 3 and 1/2 week delay in the installation of an A/C condenser fan last year and the denial of a chlorine tank pump (same as a spa) for my home water unit. After repeated attempts at getting me to re-sign, they gave me a deal I found attractive. The agent's argument that significant changes had been made to expedite service in rural areas where I live. The condenser fan, once again failed! And, may I add, it was a Friday, mid-July, in central Florida! I used the web service as to not get hung up on a phone call. I had a repair service assigned in relatively short order. The appointment was confirmed on a SUNDAY by the repair company and... Read More

Cost me $4519 to replace AC. Their technician was from out of town and told me over $2000 to repair and suggested replacement. My tech said he doubted they could even get a new coil as the AC was 1984. I had my tech replace. Faxed my paid receipt and AHS mailed me a rejection saying couldn't read it. UPS faxed it and copied yellow carbon onto white, tested it and said it was fine. It was hand written but legible. In any case the name and phone number of my AC company was typed in oversized font so all they had to do was call to verify. They deliberately slow down the process by snail mailing your rejection, denying you phone number of the department that rejects you, refuse to... Read More

The most horrible service experience one can experience. Air conditioning service call was made on August 7, the first service tech comes and says oh we don't work on systems that have Nest Thermostats. He leaves. Two days later another tech shows up, says the compressor is bad, he has to have his supervisor come two more days later to verify that the compressor is bad. Somehow then they proceed to tell me that my coil has a leak, it would cost $1200 to replace the freon. They suggest to upgrade the system, I asked for a quote, 10 days later still have not heard from anyone. If I was rating them I would rate them Negative 10 stars.
