ABOUT THIS CARD

There aren’t too many travel rewards credit cards that have no annual fee, and the Hilton Honors American Express is one of the better ones. It offers you plenty of chances to earn Honors points towards free night stays, including 80,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 within three months of opening a new account. Plus, you can earn an additional 50,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend a total of $5,000 in purchases on the Card in the first 6 months. You also earn 7x points for purchases at Hilton hotels and resorts, 5x at U.S. restaurants, at U.S. supermarkets, and at U.S. gas stations and 3x elsewhere. A typical free night at a mid-range hotel in a mid-sized city often requires 40,000 - 60,000 points per night.

Benefits include complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status, which offers you free internet access during stays, and late checkouts. You can upgrade to Gold status when you use your card to spend $20,000 in a calendar year, which also offers you room upgrades and free breakfasts at select properties.  There’s no annual fee for this card, and no foreign transaction fees. However, American Express offers other Hilton cards with more generous rewards and benefits, albeit with an annual fee.

4 things informed consumers need to know:
  1. Get enough credit cards to keep the balance on each one below 30% of its limit.
  2. Pay on time, use cards sparingly and keep your accounts open.
  3. Don’t apply for too many cards at once. Do 1 today, again in 6 months, etc.
  4. More cards mean a wider variety of points and benefits.
