ABOUT THIS CARD

For years, the Chase Freedom offered 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent each quarter on select merchant categories that change every quarter. This new version, Freedom Flex, keeps that formula, but adds plenty more opportunities to earn bonuses. New bonus categories include 5% back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining at restaurants -including takeout and eligible delivery services- and 3% back at drugstores. All other purchases will earn 1% cash back.

New applicants can earn a $200 bonus for spending $500 within three months of account opening plus 0% intro APR on purchases for the first 15 months. It also includes cell phone protection of up to $800 per claim and $1,000 per year. Other benefits include car rental insurance, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage. There’s no annual fee for this card.

4 things informed consumers need to know:
  1. Get enough credit cards to keep the balance on each one below 30% of its limit.
  2. Pay on time, use cards sparingly and keep your accounts open.
  3. Don’t apply for too many cards at once. Do 1 today, again in 6 months, etc.
  4. More cards mean a wider variety of points and benefits.
